18/02/2008 @ 00:40:03: Oldsmobile "98" vs "Ninety-Eight" or "Ninety Eight"
This one has been puzzling me for some time. How are we labeling models? Is it by the brochure/sales documents or the actual vehicle badging? In either case, when did Oldsmobile use "98" and when was it written out? I know the badge on a 59 is spelled out, as well as later in the 80s, but it may have alternated in years between. I am 90 percent certain that "88" was never written out. Is this worthy of correction?

Note: In this 1948 ad, it is clearly writen as "98."

On my Fathers 1970, it was spelled out on the lower frt fender, but it also had a 98 LS crest on the c pillar. I can see where there would be some confusion.

We should decide what to use on the site... but as I do not know these cars at all I can only wait that some other members give detailed info or take a decision.
Either we name all in the same way by facility purposes, or we decide what do use for which range of years.

I'm pretty sure 98 should be "Ninety-Eight". I'm not so sure about 88 though...

Here it says "88":

Here it says "Eighty-Eight":

Interesting, taxiguy. Cool avatar as well! Being the mid-priced series, spelling out Eighty-Eight doesn't do it for me. I never thought Olds would try that!

Thanks. Yours is neat too. What kind of car is that? I'm gonna guess 1958 Pontiac? I'm probably waaaay off
I don't know too much about 50s-60s cars, I'm mostly into 70s-80s-90s-00s cars.

Na taxi, it is a Buick (hence the "Roadmaster" moniker. The last one of those was a station wagon of 1996 here).

My avatar is from an artist, and what you see is the whole thing. I thought it was a cool detail piece, and that color stands out against the white of this board. Cheers!

Would it be possible to create a code or script that would redirect "ninety-eight," "ninetyeight," or "ninety eight" to a single "98" depository or index? Would not be case sensitive, but should not accept misspellings either.

But shouldn't it be written in letters for some models?
Else I can simply rename all Ninety-Eight to 98

I have an idea for this. All 98's of every generation should be "Ninety Eight". 88's from 195?-1985 should be "88" (or "Delta 88" if permits), while the downsized front wheel drive models from 1985-1999 should be "Eighty-Eight" as that is how they were branded for those years.

With a dash for Ninety Eight?
I'll make the changes later today.

It's almost too small a detail, but I will go either way if I see it used in corporate print documents (brochures/mailers/dealer postcards).

The advertising copy was written in accordance with the rules of English grammar. I would agree with the inclusion of the hyphen.
